Two directions, one airport
A rental that touches Damascus International usually runs in one of two directions: you have just landed and want the keys as soon as you are through, or you are flying out and the airport is the last thing you see before handing the car back. Car Zone charges nothing for either. Delivery to DAM is free, and delivery anywhere inside Damascus is free too, so the airport adds nothing to what you were quoted. Where a fee does apply it is charged once for the whole hire rather than per day — $40 to Homs and Hama, $50 to Latakia and Tartus, $55 to Aleppo and Aleppo airport — and shown in US dollars in the quote before you pay rather than discovered afterwards.
The airport sits outside the built-up city
DAM is not on the edge of a suburb. It stands beyond the Ghouta on open farmland southeast of the capital, somewhere between 25 and 30 km from the centre depending on which point you measure from, with orchards and low villages along the approach and very little else. That has two practical consequences. The highway moves quickly once you are clear of the city, and there is nowhere much to spend an hour if you arrive far too early. Coming in, allow about half an hour to central Damascus and noticeably more in the late afternoon. Going out, leave more time than the distance suggests: desks close well before departure, and the road is dark once the buildings stop.
Pick the car for the trip, not for the terminal
The airport is a starting line, and what you take from it should follow where you are going. Staying in the capital and parking in the narrow streets around Bab Touma or Sha'alan? A small Hyundai or Kia is the easier machine to live with. Four people with real luggage heading north? A Chevrolet or a Mitsubishi swallows it without complaint. Long runs toward the coast often go out in our Changan and DFSK models.
