An airport on open ground east of the city
Aleppo International (ALP) sits roughly seven kilometres southeast of the centre, out by Nayrab, with flat country on three sides of it. Car Zone delivers to the airport for a flat $55. That figure is not a doorstep surprise: it is written into your quote in US dollars, next to the rental itself, so the total you agree to is the total.
The short distance is what shapes a visit here. Aleppo is a city people come to for a specific reason — a family house, a workshop in the eastern industrial belt, a week of walking the old quarters — and the reason is almost never at the airport. A car is simply what closes the gap between the runway and the thing you actually came for.
Two cities to drive in
Inside the ring, Aleppo is medieval in plan and unforgiving in width: the lanes under the Citadel, the approaches to Bab al-Faraj, the stone alleys of Jdeideh. In that half, a compact Hyundai, Kia or Changan is worth more than any amount of engine — it fits gaps a wider car has to pass twice before admitting defeat.
Outside the ring the logic inverts. The newer western districts, the road out toward the university, the long straight runs northeast toward the industrial estates: all of it is wide, quick and spread far apart, and a Chevrolet, DFSK or Mitsubishi turns an errand into a short drive rather than an expedition.
Most visitors spend a week doing some of both. Choose for the half that will take more of your hours, and say which when you book.
The morning you fly out
Leaving is where local knowledge pays. The airport road is direct, but the eastern approach carries working traffic early on, and the quarter of an hour it takes on a quiet Friday is not the quarter of an hour it takes at half past seven on a Tuesday. Add the spare fifteen minutes. Aleppo in July also runs hot enough that a car left standing in the sun wants a few minutes before it is pleasant, and January mornings on that flat ground east of town are genuinely cold and often foggy.
